Fire damages Heavens Pets building at Lake Lawn cemetery

METAIRIE, La. (WVUE) - The New Orleans Fire Department responded Sunday morning (Jan. 14) to a call at the Lake Lawn cemetery after smoke was seen coming from a structure on the property.

A Fox 8 crew arrived at the scene around 4:45 a.m. to see dozens of NOFD units and firefighters working to put out the fire, which appeared to be inside the Heaven’s Pets building.

Heaven’s Pets is a cremation and bereavement center for animals that sits on north end of the cemetery.

Patrick McCausland, president of Heaven’s Pets, confirmed the damage to his business but said in a statement, “Thankfully, no one was injured.”

“We have put measures in place to remain operational and offer continuous service to our families,” McCausland said. “We care deeply about our families and are here to support them through their journey following the loss of a pet. We thank the New Orleans Fire Department, who responded immediately to help us during this difficult event.”

It’s unclear what caused the fire or when it was brought under control. The NOFD has not yet responded to requests for information on the fire.

Heaven’s Pets said that while damage is assessed and repairs are planned, families can call the company at (866) 710-8854, email info@heavenspet.com or visit heavenspets.com for information if they are in need of services following the loss of a pet.
